Neurosurgery Resident
Barrow Neurological Institute
Phoenix, Arizona
My name is Joe DiDomenico. I am a neurosurgical resident physician at the Barrow Neurological Institute. Currently, I am within the fifth year of training. Sub-specializing in minimally invasive spinal deformity surgery, I am currently within an enfolded complex spinal deformity fellowship at the Barrow from January 2023 with completion in December 2024.
Prior to beginning my neurosurgery residency, I spent eight years performing laboratory research in the field of brain tumor biology. This included my time at the University of Pittsburgh and at Northwestern University, investigating the mechanisms driving brain-tumor induced local and systemic immunosuppression. At the Barrow Neurological Institute, I spent my first three years of residency continuing to participate in research endeavors as an investigator of cellular neuro-oncology within the Ivy Brain Tumor Center. After dedicating my clinical interest to spinal deformity, I have transitioned my research experience to investigations within minimally invasive spinal and deformity surgery. To date, this experience has led to multiple manuscripts published or in press, along with a podium presentation at the SMISS national conference in 09/2022. Moving into an eighteen month period of clinical fellowship and dedicated research time, I will be focusing on the outcomes associated with lateral techniques to lumbar interbody placement, predictors associated with failure of arthrodesis, radiologic techniques to improve decision-making for spinal deformity surgery, biomechanics of various spinal fusion constructs, and sports-related outcomes and return-to-play research for athletes undergoing spinal surgery.
