Andrew Mark Erwood, MD. Complex Neurosurgery Spine Fellow, Northwestern University. Born the second of five children to parents Margaret and Scott Erwood from Des Moines, Iowa. Second generation neurosurgeon following father Scott who practiced general neurosurgery in Atlanta, Georgia. Older brother Matthew Erwood is a practicing neurosurgeon in Birmingham, Alabama.
Studied Biomedical Engineering at Georgia Tech and graduated with highest honors.
Returned to Iowa to attend University of Iowa for medical school and inducted AOA as a junior. Completed the research distinction track studying spiral ganglion neuron regeneration under the mentorship of Dr. Marlan Hansen who now holds the Brian F. McCabe Distinguished Chair in Otolaryngology- Head and Neck Surgery at the University of Iowa.
Returned to Atlanta to complete residency in neurological surgery at Emory University with elective time focus in spine surgery with Dr. Dan Refai who is the director of spinal oncology at the Emory Spine Center.
While a resident, served as a CNS Guidelines Fellow, completing abstract review for the CNS Perioperative Spine Guidelines and Brain Metastases Guidelines Updates.
Now completing a complex spine fellowship at Northwestern University under the direction of Dr. Tyler Koski with a focus on adult spinal degenerative deformity.
