Medical Student
University of California, Davis
Sacramento, California
Gabriel Urreola is a second-year Medical Student at the University of California Davis. He grew up in East County San Diego, in a single-mother household with his two older siblings. Despite challenges navigating underserved immigrant communities, Gabriel remained dedicated to furthering his education by obtaining a Bachelor of Science from UCLA and completing a post-baccalaureate program at UCSF. Gabriel never forgot his roots and remained committed to serving those from his community. At UCLA, he brought over 1,500 inner-city students, including his high school, to college conferences teaching them about financial aid, admissions requirements, and wellness. During his gap years, Gabriel spent his time in Skid Row, Los Angeles managing quality improvement services and projects for unhoused and undocumented populations who could not afford healthcare. Here, he leveraged data analytics and technology to expand access to patients. Through innovative software, Gabriel expanded the clinic's reach through personalized messages that notified patients about vaccine eligibility, missing preventative screenings, and upcoming wellness exams. At Medical School, Gabriel continues to innovate to bridge health disparities for Latino communities in Sacramento. On top of his work in the community, Gabriel is a dedicated researcher working in a systems neuroscience lab and will present a review on Spinal Cord Stimulation during the 2023 Spine Summit conference. Gabriel hopes to become a physician leader and future neurosurgeon.
