Dr. Gregory M. Mundis, Jr., is a graduate of the class of 1999. His drive to create value in others is deeply rooted in his upbringing. Dr. Mundis was born in Springfield, MO, and at the age of 2 moved to Vienna, Austria alongside his older sister, Hollie (class of 1997) and parents, Greg and Sandra Mundis as missionaries. His time oversees culminated with a trip to India where his desire to become a physician was birthed. After completing his undergraduate degree in biology at Evangel University in 1999, he completed his medical school training at the University of Missouri-Columbia and his orthopedic residency at The University of Oklahoma. Following, he was accepted to the prestigious San Diego Spine Fellowship for additional training in pediatric and adult Spine deformity surgery. He has been in practice for nine years in San Diego as a part of Scripps Clinic Medical Group.
With a passion for spine surgery, Dr. Mundis focuses on treating scoliosis and spinal deformities. He is part of the International Spine Study Group (ISSG), an elite group of internationally recognized spine surgeons, conducting high profile research. As a result of these efforts and those at Scripps Clinic, Dr. Mundis has had the opportunity to publish 15 book chapters, over 175 peer reviewed publications, and presents his research at national and international meetings focused on the advancement in treating scoliosis and spinal deformity. His current research interests include applying minimally invasive spine surgery to deformity correction and outcome-based research focused on cost effectiveness.
Dr. Mundis not only has a busy practice, but also finds the time to invest in other important aspects of spine surgery. He is an avid educator and is the co-director of San Diego Spine Fellowship dedicated to teaching the next generation of spine surgeons. Furthermore, Dr. Mundis teaches on a monthly basis, nationally and internationally, educating his peer spine surgeons, engineers, students, and other healthcare professionals regarding advancements in technology, deformity surgery, minimally invasive spine surgery and global outreach.
To exercise his love of art and creativity developed during childhood, Dr. Mundis works closely with several companies to develop implants used during spine surgery to advance the field and provide safer delivery of care. As such, he has been named on many patents and helped launch over a dozen different spine implant systems for both children and adults suffering from spinal deformities.
Dr. Mundis travels to educate international surgeons, operating on children who otherwise would not receive care. He has operated on 5 continents and spent time in Saudi Arabia, Kenya, Cyprus, Brazil and most recently, focused his effort in Colombia and Mexico. Over the last four years he has partnered with Global Spine Outreach and was recently named their CEO. His passion is establishing new programs and cultural integration in an effort to provide free, world-class spine deformity care to children that would otherwise not have access to these lifesaving surgeries.
