I am a neurosurgeon specialized in nerves and spine. I have performed extensive research using animal models to investigate treatments for spinal cord injuries (SCI) and nerve injuries. I grew up in Cairo, Egypt and graduated from the faculty of Medicine at Cairo University. During medical school I became very interested in the Neurosciences and Neurosurgery, hence I continued on to complete Neurosurgery residency at the University of Rennes, in France, in 1999 and a Neurosurgery residency in the USA at Thomas Jefferson University hospital in Philadelphia in 2008. I further specialized in spine and nerves by completing a spine fellowship at Washington University in St. Louis USA, and a combined spine and nerve fellowship at Mayo Clinic, Rochester USA. In 2009 I joined the University of Wisconsin as an assistant professor of Neurosurgery. As I began treating many young patients with devastating nerve injuries and SCI. I became passionate about developing better treatments to improve the functional recovery for these patients. I published several research papers investigating treatments for nerve injuries and SCI, including using mineral coatings to deliver cytokines. I also published a surgical guide book on the operative exposures of the nerves as well as a book on Nerve Cases, and a Neursurgery Primary Examination review. I am proud to say that, 'Anatomy and Exposure of Spinal Nerves' has excedded expectations, and is now translated to Chinese and Russian, which encouraged me to work on the second edition now. I plan to continue research in Nerve regeneration and SCI in order to develop better understanding and better therapeutics to hopefully cure paralysis.
