David M. Overman is Chief of the Division of Cardiovascular Surgery at Children’s Minnesota and staff surgeon, Mayo Clinic - Children’s Minnesota Cardiovascular Collaborative. He grew up in Chicago and Minneapolis, completed his undergraduate education at Lewis and Clark College in Portland, OR, and attended medical school at the University of Minnesota. Dr Overman completed general surgery residency at Hennepin County Medical Center, vascular and cardiothoracic surgery fellowships at Rush Presbyterian – St. Luke’s Medical Center and a fellowship in pediatric cardiac surgery at the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto, ON. Upon completion of his training in 1997, Dr. Overman joined the staff of The Children’s Heart Clinic at Children’s Minnesota. Dr. Overman has been an auditor for the STS Congenital Heart Surgery Database since 2010 and is a member of the STS CHSD Taskforce. He is a member of the Executive Council and Chair of the Resource and Development Committee for the Congenital Heart Surgeons Society. He is also Medical Director of Children’s HeartLink, a global non-governmental organization that builds partnerships between pediatric cardiac programs in the developing world and volunteer programs in North America and Europe. Dr. Overman is an Adjunct Associate Profesor of Surgery at the Mayo Clinic College of Medicine and Science and is President-Elect of the Congenital Heart Surgeons Society.
Dr. Overman’s clinical interests include the surgical management of neonates, children and adults with congenital heart disease. He has specific expertise with hypoplastic left heart syndrome and complex neonatal repairs, as well as aortic root disease and the Ross Procedure. His research interests include surgical decision-making and treatment for unbalanced atrioventricular septal defect, stem cell therapy in complex congenital heart disease substrates, clinical databasing and reporting of clinical outcomes, and structural modeling of congenital heart disease care on a national level.
