Dr. Hari Nathan, MD, PhD, FACS, FSSO is an Associate Professor of Surgery and Chief of the Division of Hepato-Pancreato-Biliary Surgery at the University of Michigan. Dr. Nathan completed both his undergraduate and medical education with honors at The Johns Hopkins University. He also completed advanced training in health services research and was awarded a PhD from The Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. Dr. Nathan completed his clinical residency training in general surgery at The Johns Hopkins Hospital. He subsequently completed a clinical fellowship in complex general surgical oncology at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center. He joined the faculty of the University of Michigan in 2014. Dr. Nathan's clinical focus includes the treatment of tumors of the liver, bile duct, pancreas, and stomach.
Dr. Nathan’s health services research portfolio focuses on variation in the cost and quality of surgical care. His current work, supported by a R02 from the Agency for Healthcare Research and Qualioty, focuses on understanding how hospital networks can improve the cost and quality of surgical care. In recognition of his work and future promise, he received the 2018 Joan L. and Julius H. Jacobson II Promising Investigator Award from the American College of Surgeons. In addition to his research pursuits, Dr. Nathan is the Director of the Michigan Value Collaborative, a coalition of hospitals and physician organizations that use data analytics and collaborative quality improvement to improve the value of healthcare in Michigan.
