Dr. Haynes is a melanoma and sarcoma surgical oncologist at the Dell Medical School of the University of Texas at Austin and the director of the UT Health Austin Surgical Oncology clinic. He also serves as the associate chair for research of the department of surgery and perioperative care. Dr. Haynes earned his medical degree from Wayne State University and completed a residency in general surgery at Massachusetts General Hospital, one of the teaching hospitals of Harvard Medical School. He completed a fellowship in complex general surgical oncology at The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center as well as a research fellowship in complex general surgical oncology at Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health. Prior to relocating to Austin, he served on the faculty of the Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Medical School.
Dr. Haynes is an internationally known researcher. His work focuses on improving the quality and safety of surgical care for patients with cancer and other conditions. He is frequently asked to speak about topics that include multidisciplinary management of sarcoma and melanoma, communication and teamwork in the operating room, and tools for improving surgical safety. He also served on the leadership team that developed and tested the World Health Organization Surgical Safety Checklist. His research has been published in many leading journals, including The New England Journal of Medicine, The Journal of the American Medical Association, the Journal of Clinical Oncology, The Lancet, and more.
