Gachon University College of Medicine, Republic of Korea
Joon-Hyop Lee is the assistant professor in the Department of Surgery in Gachon University College of Medicine GiI Medical Center (Incheon, South Korea). He graduated from Seoul National University College of Medicine and received his residency training in surgical training in,Seoul National University Hospital.
He specializes in endocrine surgery ranging from open thyroid, parathyroid operations to minimally invasive ones including transaxillary, bilateral areolar breast, transoral approach using both endoscope and robotic surgical systems.
His topic of interest in research lies in the effect of iodine on thyroid cancer. Recently, he has collaborated with his colleagues in his institution, aided by government funds to carry out research using artificial intelligence. Their team is developing an algorithm which would help endocrine surgeons during thyroidectomy to spot parathyroid glands, which is not easy to identify for the unexperienced eyes. Although the project has faced setbacks during the pandemics due to his colleagues not being able to enter the hospital, Dr. Lee’s team is on attempting to develop the aforementioned algorithm into a clinically applicable software within the year.
