Robin Schmitz was born and raised in Germany. In 2008 he attended medical school at the University of Heidelberg from which he graduated in 2015. During medical school, he received a research scholarship from the German Research Foundation that allowed him to study the role of tumor-associated macrophages in colorectal cancer. Shortly after graduation, he started his general surgery training in the Department of General Surgery in Heidelberg before deciding to move to the US and continue his general surgery training at Duke University in 2016. While at Duke, he completed a two-year research fellowship focusing on antibody mediated rejection in kidney allotransplantation. In 2022, he matched into the Complex General Surgical Oncology fellowship at UPMC which he is scheduled to start in 2023 after finishing his general surgery training.
