MD/PhD Student

Gopika is a MD/PhD student at the Medical College of Wisconsin in Milwaukee. She received her B.S. in Biomedical Engineering from the University of Wisconsin, Madison. Throughout undergraduation and her first year in medical school, she has been involved with numerous basic science and clinical research projects focused on therapeutic strategies and outcomes in cancer patients. She is also currently developing a leadership curriculum for medical students, and was funded by the Kern Institute TI2 grant to study innovative teaching methods for the curriculum. She co-chairs the Kern Institute Student Leadership Committee, and is passionate about advocating for the incorporporation of leadership training (i.e. the ability to influence change) into many aspects of medical education. She continues to apply her backgound in engineering and human-centered design principles to increase healthcare access in the Milwaukee community and mentors undergraduate students. She volunteers at free clinics in the Milwaukee area, and is passionate about giving back to her community through teaching and research. She is the recipient of 2020 Women in Science Student Award, 2019 American Association of Cancer Research 2nd place Undergraduate Award, and 2015 Inaugural United Way of GMWC Philanthropic Youth Award.
