Matthew Iyer is a second-year surgical oncology fellow at Duke University Medical Center. Prior to embarking on a career in medicine, he completed his B.S. and M.S. in Electrical and Computer Engineering, along with a B.A. in Music, at the University of Colorado. He then enrolled in the Medical Scientist Training Program at the University of Michigan Medical School and completed his Ph.D. in Bioinformatics under the mentorship of Dr. Arul Chinnaiyan, M.D., Ph.D. His research focused on the discovery of novel cancer-associated transcripts, including long non-coding RNAs, through pan-cancer analyses of RNA-seq datasets. After medical school, he completed general surgery residency at New York Presbyterian Hospital - Weill Cornell Medical Center. After matching at Duke for surgical oncology fellowship, Matthew contributed to several translational research projects in pancreatic cancer and melanoma focusing on the analysis of spatial transcriptomics and RNA-Seq datasets. After fellowship Matthew seeks a surgeon scientist faculty position that will enable him to prioritize computational oncology research.
