Resident physician
HCA Healthcare
My name is Daniel Matienzo and I am currently a third year General Surgery Resident. I come from a middle-class Puerto Rican family and am the first in my family to graduate from medical school. My father and grandfather were in the military so I have lived in several different states such as Texas, Florida, Wyoming and California. I earn my Bachelor's Degree in Biochemistry at California State University, Dominguez Hills. I also was the starting catcher and captain of the baseball team and led our team to playoffs for the first time in 10+ years. After undergraduate school, I attended medical school at American University of the Caribbean in St. Maarten. Unfortunately, we were hit by Hurricane Irma, one of the strongest hurricanes in the island's history. We were forced to complete our basic science curriculum in Preston, England. From then, I completed my clinical rotations in Long Island and Brooklyn, New York, Danbury, Connecticut and Visalia, California. In March of 2020, I matched into the inaugural General Surgery residency class at HCA Florida Westside and Northwest Hospitals. Today, I am in pursuit of matching into a Surgical Oncology fellowship with emphasis in robotics.
