Associate Professor of Surgery
Mount Sinai
Christina Weltz has been a breast surgeon at Mount Sinai for 25 years. She treats patients with malignant and benign breast disease as well as women at risk of breast cancer. Her research has included developing the paravertebral block as an alternative to general anesthesia for breast surgery. She has developed a novel technique for diagnosing and treating women with abnormal nipple discharge. Current research is focusing on the problem of breast cancer arising in tissue that was not adequately removed with mastectomy; the barriers to childbearing in young women diagnosed with breast cancer; and the reasons why women still present with very advanced disease during the current era of widespread breast cancer awareness. She has won awards for teaching and she directs the Dubin Breast Center surgery fellowship.
