Half-Day Fellows Institute II

Wednesday, March 22: 12 – 5:00 PM

Building on career development topics from SSO’s popular Fellows Institute event, this workshop will focus on areas such as strengthening your CV, negotiating your contract, developing mentoring relationships, and building a clinical practice. The workshop culminates in a panel discussion about the differences in working in a private practice versus academic setting. Faculty will speak to personal experiences, and there will be opportunities for Q &A with attendees. Open to all fellows and trainees. Lunch will be provided.

Research Pre-Meeting: SSO Grant Writing Workshop and Mock Study Section
SSO Grant Writing Workshop and Mock Study Section

This two-part pre-meeting workshop includes:
  • Part 1-Grant Writing Workshop (1-2:30 PM; Open to all registrants-Register when you register for SSO2023). Intended to provide education and support on the grant writing process. Faculty will moderate and organize an interactive session touching on numerous aspects of the grant process, including federal and non-federal funding, grantsmanship, mentoring, and other topics important in establishing a career as a surgeon scientist.
  • Part 2-Mock Study Section (3-5:00 PM; By invitation only). By invitation only to applicants who have submitted a proposal and been selected to attend. R-type or K-type grants in health services, clinical, or basic/translational research from up to ten SSO members will be mock reviewed using the National Institutes of Health study section format. Faculty will conduct an NIH-style study section and grant authors can observe the process and receive feedback on their submissions. Application to participate in the mock study session closed December 2022. Participation in the Mock Study Section will require a letter of intent, grant submission for those selected to attend, and be by invitation only based on submissions selected. If you wish to apply to attend submit a one-page letter of intent with draft aims/overview by December 7 to pamhayden@surgonc.org.
