Elizabeth McClure, a senior research epidemiologist at RTI International, has more than 20 years of experience in leading global research in maternal and newborn health. Since 2001, in collaboration with the National Institutes of Health (NIH) scientists, she has served as an investigator and led the data coordinating center for the NICHD Global Network for Research of Women’s and Children’s Health. The Global Network has conducted research in India, Pakistan, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Zambia, Kenya, Guatemala, and Bangladesh to address the major causes of maternal and newborn mortality in low-resource settings. Global Network studies have addressed many interventions, including misoprostol, antenatal corticosteroids, neonatal resuscitation, emergency obstetric, and neonatal care. Dr. McClure currently leads the data coordination for a Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation–funded project, the Antenatal and postnatal Research Collective (ARC), a multi-site initiative in sub-Sahara Africa and southeast Asia to assess the burden of disease in pregnancy and conduct pregnancy risk stratification analyses. Dr. McClure was the co-lead for the BMGF-funded MANDATE initiative, to model impact of evidence based interventions on reducing maternal and newborn mortality and morbidity in low- and middle-income countries. In addition, Dr. McClure has led research efforts to evaluate the impact of infection on cause of death in sub-Saharan African and Asia. She earned her doctorate in epidemiology, with emphasis on perinatal and infectious disease, from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She currently is an adjunct professor at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Dr. McClure has had a special interest in stillbirth and has authored numerous scientific papers addressing stillbirth in low- and middle-income countries.
