Celeste Durnwald, MD, is an Associate Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology in the Division of Maternal Fetal Medicine at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania. She is the Director of the Perinatal Diabetes Program at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania and Director of High Risk Services at the Helen O. Dickens Center for Women's Health. Her research interests are focused on understanding the interplay between altered glucose metabolism and perinatal outcomes. She is the site-PI for 2 NIH funded multicenter studies: (1) MOMPOD study: evaluating the safety and efficacy of the addition of metformin to insulin therapy in patients with Type 2 diabetes and (2) TIME study: evaluating the timing of delivery among patients with gestational diabetes. She recently complete a large prospective cohort study of 800 health pregnancy patients undergoing continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) during all three trimesters of pregnancy to better characterize glycemic patterns associated with a diagnosis of GDM and adverse perinatal outcomes. She serves on the Dexcom Gestational Diabetes Advisory Board. She is also the physician lead for HUP Harvest, a hospital based food pantry at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania. She is an active member of The Food for Health Program- funded as Penn Nursing Innovation Accelerator Program- which aims to develop a sustainable food delivery, education, and resource program for pregnant patients with diabetes at the Helen O. Dickens Center at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania (HUP) who are experiencing food insecurity. This program leverages the partnership between the HUP Harvest pantry program, the IMPaCT Community Health Worker (CHW) program and Penn Nursing to help combat food insecurity in this vulnerable patient population. Penn Nursing student and CHWs will work together to address the root causes of food insecurity.
