Clinical Assistant Professor, Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Division of Maternal Fetal Medicine
Stanford University
Sanaa Suharwardy, MD, is a Clinical Assistant Professor in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Division of Maternal Fetal Medicine at Stanford University. She graduated from UCLA with a degree in Economics. She then completed medical school at Washington University in Saint Louis, where she developed a passion for women’s health. She returned home to the Bay Area to complete residency at Stanford Hospital. Her interest in clinical informatics began in her intern year during the implementation of a new electronic health record. She worked closely with informatics managers to enhance the electronic health record as the department physician representative for IS throughout residency, in addition to chairing the newly formed Resident Safety Council. When it came time for the next phase of training, Sanaa petitioned the American Board of Ob-Gyn as well as the American Board of Preventative Medicine to approve a joint fellowship in Maternal Fetal Medicine and Clinical Informatics at Stanford, becoming the first fellow in the country to do so. As a fellow, Sanaa has focused on the intersection of obstetrics and informatics, implementing EHR-integrated handoff tool on L&D, testing digital therapeutics for maternal mental health, fashioning clinical decision support to reduce opioid prescriptions, revamping perinatal loss workflow, and studying telemedicine in the era of COVID. She led the formation of informatics groups within ACOG and SMFM, and continues to engage with Ob-Gyn informaticists around the country. Sanaa looks forward to continuing to work at the intersection of technology and women's health.
