Interventional radiology (IR) has an increasing therapeutic role in taking care of non-surgical patients with acute cholecystitis. Patients with “chronic percutaneous cholecystostomy drains” for calculous cholecystitis can now be treated using methods such as lithotripsy and/or cholecystoduodenal stents. This session will address data on routine methods, perspectives from a surgeon and advanced endoscopist, and advanced IR techniques (lithotripsy and cystic duct stenting). A 30-minute multidisciplinary discussion on case management will be the highlight.
Learning Objectives:
Describe current data for and role of percutaneous cholecystostomy and its surgical and interventional gastroenterology alternatives.
Describe procedures to remove gallbladder drains including lithotripsy, cholecystoduodenal stenting etc.
Describe how endoscopy can improve outcomes in patients with gallbladder drains.
