Carlos "Teddy" Huerta, MD is a current Postdoctoral Research Fellow within the laboratory of Omaida Velazquez, MD and Zhao-Jun Liu, MD, PhD as well as a PGY4/R2 Resident in General Surgery at the University of Miami/Jackson Memorial Hospital. He graduated summa cum laude in 2015 from Rhodes College with a B.S. in Biology with Research Honors and was inducted into the Phi Beta Kappa honors society. He spent three years as an undergraduate research associate within the laboratory of Stacey Schultz-Cherry, PhD at St. Jude Children's Research Hospital where his work was recognized nationally by the American Society of Microbiology's Undergraduate Research Capstone Award and the Barry Goldwater National Scholarship. He received his medical degree from the University of Kentucky where he was inducted into the Alpha Omega Alpha honors society before attending residency within the University of Miami DeWitt Daughtry Department of Surgery in 2019. He has significant experience in both clinical outcomes (8 years) and basic science (6 years) research. He has published more than 40 peer-reviewed articles and book chapters as well as given over 30 oral presentations at national and international conferences. His current research focus is in creating translational cell-based therapeutics utilizing mesenchymal stem cells to treat ischemic wounds and augment tissue revascularization associated with chronic limb-threatening ischemia. His clinical research interests also include the full breadth of pediatric surgical diseases and minimally invasive surgery. He has been elected to multiple committees within national surgical organizations including the Association for Academic Surgery Committee on Technology and Communications and the American Pediatric Surgical Association (APSA) Outcomes and Evidence-Based Practice Committee and the APSA Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Committee. He was selected as the 2021-2023 Medical Education Scholar within the DeWitt Daughtry Department of Surgery in which he co-implemented the transition of a new integrated Surgery Clerkship for second-year medical students as well as a wound care lecture series for fourth-year medical students transitioning to general surgery residency.
