Dr. Angela Gibson has been involved in the care of burn patients for over 20 years. She began her career as a registered nurse in the Burn Unit at the University of Wisconsin. She then went on to obtain her MD and PhD through the Medical Scientist Training Program at the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health, where she also completed her General Surgery residency training and a fellowship in Surgical Critical Care. She additionally trained in burn surgery at Shriners Hospitals for Children–Northern California and UC Davis Health System. Dr. Gibson is certified by the American Board of Surgery in General Surgery and Surgical Critical Care, and specializes in trauma, emergency surgery, surgical critical care, and burns. She also treats complex wounds. Dr. Gibson has built a robust burn research program encompassing basic, pre-clinical, and translational research, as well as multi-center clinical trial research with many collaborations across the UW campus, the U.S, and internationally. Her research interests focus on epithelial regeneration in burn injury, evaluation of skin substitutes, human skin model development for wound healing, and understanding the burn wound microenvironment. Additionally, Dr. Gibson developed a new, comprehensive, multi-disciplinary complex wound healing service for the UW Health hospital system, and was named its Medical Director in 2018.
