Medical Student
University of the Incarnate Word School of Osteopathic Medicine
San Antonio, TX
Denise Nemeth is a second year medical student at the University of the Incarnate Word School of Osteopathic Medicine in San Antonio, TX. She is originally from a small rural Texas town on the US/Mexico Border. Ms. Nemeth completed a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology in 2011 from UT San Antonio. She then completed a Master’s Degree in Physician Assistant Studies at the UT Health San Antonio. Ms. Nemeth returned to her community to practice as a Physician Assistant (PA) upon graduation in 2015. Initially, she served the community in an Urgent Care center. She then transitioned to working as a General and Vascular Surgery PA, under the mentorship of three skillful surgeons who trained her to navigate the unique challenges of practicing in the surgical setting in a rural community. During this time, she realized the dire need for well-trained wound care clinicians and embarked on a journey to learn from her peers, receive continuing education, and eventually became the first midlevel provider in her community to be a Certified Wound Specialist with the American Board of Wound Management. After much deliberation, Ms. Nemeth decided to enroll as a full-time medical student and has since moved to San Antonio, TX, where she has had the opportunity to meet amazing mentors and enter as a novice in research endeavors.
Ms. Nemeth currently remains board certified by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA). She is a student member of the American College of Surgeons, the Latino Surgical Society (LSS), and is the national Co-Chair of the Instagram committee of the Association of Women Surgeons (AWS). She is President of the American College of Osteopathic Surgeons- Medical Student Section chapter of her medical school and Vice-President of the Rural Medicine interest group. She is currently a Research and Social Media Intern at NYU Langone's Center for Surgical and Transplant Applied Research (C-STAR), an opportunity that she came about while at a research internship at the Department of Surgery at Sapienza University in Rome, Italy.
Ms. Nemeth aspires to become a General Surgeon. She has a particular interest in rural health, wound healing, colorectal surgery, and minimally invasive surgery. Her research interests are varied and include wound healing, anatomic variations/rarities, and ischemia-reperfusion injuries.
