Dr. Christopher Attinger is Chief of The Division of Wound Healing within the Department of Plastic Surgery and is Professor of Plastic and Orthopaedic Surgery at MedStar Georgetown University Hospital. He is focused on the complexity and challenges of healing wounds while preserving or improving function whether it be limb salvage or amputation. As a wound care specialist and surgeon, he focuses on surgical algorithms for limb salvage and for the latest amputation techniques to give patients the ability to maximize their individual physical potential. He leads a hospital-based team that specializes in preventing and treating lower extremity complications caused by diabetes, PVD, trauma and cancer. There is also a large focus on functional amputations that minimize subsequent pain by using TMR. The team includes Vascular, Plastic, Peripheral nerve, Podiatric and Orthopedic Surgeons, Rheumatology, Dermatology, Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy, Infectious Disease Specialists and Hospitalists. Additionally, Prosthetists, Orthotists and Physical Therapists play a key role in the recovery process post discharge. This team approach using surgical algorithms provides seamless inpatient and outpatient care tailored to returning patients to their optimal function as quickly as possible.
