State-Developed PDMPs: Responding to Opportunities and Challenges With In-House Solutions

Prescription drug monitoring program (PDMP) information supports a variety of healthcare, regulatory, and law enforcement initiatives. State-developed PDMPs are agile, adaptive, and innovative. They provide states with the ability to immediately respond to statute, regulation, and policy changes, as well as health and public safety issues specific to their state that may not impact other PDMPs. This agility allows innovation that frequently becomes a recommended best practice for the entire PDMP community. As PDMPs mature and technology advances, state-developed PDMPs are often at the forefront of testing technologies and implementing them within their systems.

In this session, the presenters will provide overviews of in-house solutions and discuss the opportunities and challenges. They will present examples from various state PDMPs based on their participation in a working group of in-house solutions that meets regularly to share ideas and discuss technologies implemented.
