Dr. Tessa Rife-Pennington graduated from the West Virginia University School of Pharmacy in 2010. She began her career at the VA Texas Valley Coastal Bend Health Care System as an outpatient staff pharmacist. There she also started new clinical pharmacist services providing anticoagulation management and disease state management in primary care. Dr. Rife-Pennington transitioned to the San Francisco VA in 2015 to serve as Academic Detailing Program Manager, implementing a variety of initiatives to improve pain and substance use disorder care, opioid safety, and increase naloxone distribution. In 2021, Dr. Rife-Pennington transitioned to a new position as the Pain Management, Opioid Safety, Prescription Drug Monitoring Program (PMOP) Coordinator at San Francisco VA. Dr. Rife-Pennington is passionate about caring for veterans with substance use and expanding access to harm reduction services. She served as a clinician on the Addiction Consult and Prescription Opioid Safety Team at the San Francisco VA for 5 years, and she now services on the HUD/VASH Integrated Substance Use Care Team, where she provides harm reduction education and supplies to veterans experiencing homelessness. Dr. Rife-Pennington leads a variety of local quality improvement and research initiatives, teaches interdisciplinary learners, maintains Board Certification in Geriatric Pharmacy, and faculty appointment at the University of California, San Francisco, School of Pharmacy.
