Sheriff
Middlesex Sheriff's Office
Woburn, MA
As a prosecutor, legislator, professor, and law enforcement leader, Sheriff Peter J. Koutoujian has worked on the intricate issues that intersect public safety and public health throughout his career.
Sheriff Koutoujian is a graduate of Bridgewater State University, the New England School of Law and Harvard University’s Kennedy School of Government.
While a state representative, Peter Koutoujian oversaw Massachusetts’ healthcare priorities as Chairman of the Committee on Public Health. He led the state’s first commissions on prescription drug abuse as well as ethnic disparities in healthcare.
As sheriff, his use of specialty units to target treatment towards unique populations such as young adults, military veterans, and those experiencing opioid use disorder has earned national acclaim. More importantly, his commitment to data-driven research has made these programs and their results – reduced recidivism and healthier, safer communities – replicable across the country. Sheriff Koutoujian was elected by his statewide and national peers to serve as both the President of Major County Sheriffs of America and the Massachusetts Sheriffs’ Association.
