Stephen Martin, MD, EdM, FASAM, FAAFP is Boulder Care's Medical Director for Research, Education, and Quality, a position he began in February 2019. Board certified in family medicine and addiction medicine, Steve is also a Professor of Family Medicine and Community Health at UMass Chan Medical School. He is also an affiliate faculty member of the Center for Primary Care at Harvard Medical School.
Steve began his medical career as a National Health Service Scholar in a rural community health center and a Federal Prison Medical Center. Since 2009, he has worked at the Barre Family Health Center in rural central Massachusetts where he is medical director for the health center’s Office-Based Addiction Treatment program. Steve has led buprenorphine tranings in Alabama, Alaska, Massachusetts, Maine, New York, South Carolina, and West Virginia.
At Boulder, Steve has led the development of patient-centered quality metrics, leads Boulder’s Project ECHO, is a Co-Investigator for Boulder’s National Institute for Drug Abuse Small Business Innovation Research award, and has represented Boulder at several national conferences, including the American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM).
Steve’s clinical and research interests include primary care, oral health, complex care, addiction medicine, chronic pain, diagnostic error, and health disparities. In 2022, Steve became a member of the ASAM Quality Improvement Council. He is the lead or senior author of publications in the BMJ, JAMA, Lancet, Annals of Internal Medicine, Journal of Addiction Medicine, and American Journal of Public Health.
