Supporting Opioid-Dependent Pregnancies Through Collective Impact

Hushabye Nursery has been providing pre- and post-natal education in the greater Phoenix metropolitan area since 2017 through its Hushabye Opioid Pregnancy Preparation and Empowerment (HOPPE) program. Hushabye’s mission is to embrace substance-exposed infants and their caregivers with compassionate, evidence-based care that can change the course of their entire lives. In response to community need, the agency created a new care model for family systems and communities impacted by the opioid use disorder public health crisis. In November 2020, Hushabye Nursery opened its own facility and began offering an innovative and trauma-informed medical care model created by nurse practitioners to treat infants experiencing neonatal abstinence syndrome (NAS). Hushabye Nursery is an inpatient detox nursery customized to treat babies born with NAS and provide intensive outpatient family services as part of prenatal and postnatal continuous care. The model is anchored by eat, sleep, and console, along with compassionate care, providing parents an opportunity to become agents of their own change. Hushabye also practices the model of Collective Impact ― a community model that organically grows a system of care for families by using existing community providers and agencies to provide support and services that Hushabye does not. Presenters will cover how Hushabye Nursery was developed and supports families, trends in opioids around Arizona, and how community agencies are pulling together to serve differently Arizona families struggling with opioid dependence.
