The Billion Pill Pledge program started in Iowa in efforts to remove or avoid +1B opioid pills from medicine cabinets in the US. The program is a true first-dose opioid prevention program designed to support community hospitals in enhancing surgical care to best in class protocols and educating on alternate pain management approaches called Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS). Implementation of such practices have been shown to improve patient outcomes, save healthcare costs, and dramatically reduce the need for opioid pain medications after an operation.
