The federal Bureau of Prisons (BOP) oversees correctional institutions across the United States housing thousands of individuals. Recognizing the need to provide evidence-based treatment for substance use disorder, and acknowledging the U.S. Department of Justice guidance stating that denying medications for opioid use disorder (MOUD) is a violation of the Americans with Disabilities Act, the BOP has launched an effort to provide across their system all three forms of MOUD approved by the Food and Drug Administration. This monumental effort has included collaboration across the federal government including coordination with the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) and the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA).

States and local jurisdictions often view incorporating MOUD into their correctional settings as a daunting task. The BOP offers an example of utilizing a hub and spoke system to provide this life-saving care that can be a model for states and localities. Moderated by the Office of National Drug Control Policy, this panel will feature one presenter each from BOP, SAMHSA and DEA to discuss the path to the implementation and provision of MOUD across the federal system.
