Five quilters used their craft to honor and remember the 36 African Americans, documented by the Equal Justice Initiative, who were lynched by white mobs in Fulton County between 1877 and 1950. In Georgia, there are 595 documented lynching victims. There are 4400 documented so far in the United States.
There were undoubtedly countless more racial terror lynching victims for whom records do not exist. The makers hope these quilts will help educate the public about the legacy of racial terror committed to maintain white supremacy.
