Central Virginia Modern Quilt Guild Glen Allen, Virginia
This lecture will explore the context of the life and times of Harriet Powers: folk artist, sewist and quilter, born into slavery in rural Georgia in 1837. Through a block review of her two surviving quilts, we see how Powers chose to design the appliquéd figures in each block to make storytelling a central part of her quilts, instead of using the prevalent quilt block patterns of the late 1800s. Both quilts were recently exhibited together for the first time at the Boston Museum of Fine Arts. NOTE: All lectures will take place in the Westin Peachtree Ballroom, approximately a 5-10 minute walk from the quilt show building.
