Enough selvages, sorted by color, for Three-Five blocks. Each block requires at least 2-2 1/2" yards of selvages. Cut selvages with at least 1/2"-1" of printed fabric design showing beyond the edge of the selvage. Selvages should be no shorter than 4" long. Remember, you can dive into your stash and cut off the selvages! I do this!
Three-Five printed copies of the Selvage Whirlwind block pattern pieces
The quilt requires 2 yard of background fabric. For the class, only bring the amount described in the cutting/prep section. When selecting this fabric, I highly recommend a solid or textured solid rather than a print. Because this fabric will be used with a wide variety of colorful selvages, I would suggest a neutral fabric such as white, off white, tan, black, navy or gray.
The supply list works off the assumption that you will have enough to make Three-Five blocks. If you are super speedy (you know who you are!) bring more. Optional Supplies: Fabric scissors, shared scissors will be provided but you may wish to bring your own to maximize your class time and experience.
Paper scissors, shared scissors will be provided but you may wish to bring your own to maximize your class time and experience.
Neutral thread will be provided in the classroom but if you want a particular neutral to use throughout your project, bring that.
Baggies with selvages presorted by color for swapping. This is optional but highly recommended. I always find myself lacking one more selvage of the perfect color. The swap will help with that! Prep Requirements: Cut background fabric into (2) 4 1/2" x WOF strips.
Sub-cut into 4 1/2" squares.
Cut at the diagonal.
Bring 12-20 of the resulting triangles of background color. Supply Kit URL: https://duringquiettime.com/product/selvage-whirlwind or https://www.etsy.com/listing/687478212/selvage-whirlwind-block-pattern
If you are able please purchase the PDF in advance and bring a printed copy to class. If you are unable to do that or sign up last minute, Amy will have some copies available in the classroom.
Please refrain from starting in advance so that you can take advantage of her tips and tricks. Additional Supply Kit URL: Amy will have her favorite pins and needles available for sale in the classroom.
Many of us are drawn to selvages because fabric designers have made them so appealing in recent years! Learn how wide to cut your selvages, what makes a great selvage design, and tips for working with selvages. In this class, students will work with Amy's Selvage Whirlwind pattern that incorporates traditional selvage piecing with a little bit of foundation paper piecing to create really fun, colorful blocks. Students will create a plan for their own quilt tops in class – possibly organizing their selvages by designer, fabric collection, color, or theme. Selvage quilts tend to serve as memory quilts because the final quilt displays all the fabrics you have used in the last few years. Don’t forget to bring selvages to trade with classmates! Sewing machines provided!
