Required Supplies: Fabric. Monochromatic or two colors are encouraged to reduce decision fatigue.
-The class description promised 2 square feet of piecing, but it’s entirely possible that you’ll do more than that. Heidi likes making quilts that are 5x5’, so she will bring enough fabric to do that. It can be nice to work with both scraps and yardage. A gallon zip lock bag of scraps would be enough. Four yards of yardage would be more than enough, and you could probably get away with a half yard each of 2 colors if you like working small, or if you bring more scraps.
-A large scissors to cut fabric (not a snip scissors, something around 3”), shared scissors will be provided but you may wish to bring your own to maximize your class time.
-Class will include looking at a few of Heidi's machine pieced quilts, and then move quickly through demos of techniques and trying them out one by one. Bring fabric that isn’t too precious, so you can have fun sewing fast, and trying things out.
Optional Supplies: Sewing machine thread, if you’d like a specific color
-Straight pins, for possible use with a design wall
-A spool of thick thread like DMC pearl cotton size 8, to plan and visualize curves
-Heidi has a lot of scraps from backing my quilts that are about 2” by 20’. If you have scraps like this, you might have fun bringing them.
-Small scraps are another great opportunity. Anything 1” square or larger can be fun to use.
-If there’s another kind of scrap that you accumulate a lot of, this will be fun to problem solve with in the afternoon- Heidi loves a challenge!
-You can bring any kind of fabric. Scraps from clothing, old clothes, men’s shirts, etc. If you plan to hand quilt, please do check that you can get your needle through two layers without excessive strain- Heidi finds that high thread count bed sheets aren’t worth the pain that they cause her wrist. She likes sewing with cotton, linen, or a combination of both. Muslin is just as fun to sew with as other cottons, and it can be fun to dye yourself.
-We will have rulers and rotary cutters to share in class. Heidi likes using these tools, and she will have a small version to keep near her machine. You are welcome to do this too, but it’s optional. She finds that some rotary cutters hurt her hand to use, so she will have the rotary cutter that she shares about on my linked ‘favorite supplies’ page.

Heidi Parkes is known for hand piecing – this rare machine piecing workshop with her is a glimpse into a wild world, free of pins, measuring, precise seam allowances, and thread-tail trimming – and it's sure to be a whole lot of fun! Heidi uses machine piecing frequently – focusing on texture, mixing large and small scale piecing, and creating compositions that entice viewers to look just a little bit longer. This workshop will focus specifically on techniques for piecing, and students may leave with as much as two square feet of finished piecing. Students can choose to turn it into a mini or use it as the start of a larger project. Come ready to have fun at a machine, and enjoy looking at the surprising work of your peers! Students should bring monochromatic color palettes and scrap bags to reduce decision fatigue. Sewing machines provided!
