Required Supplies: • One 18x18” piece of base fabric. Heidi usually uses white unbleached cotton muslin, but you can use anything. (You might enjoy working with 4 pieces like this. You can put different curves on each one in class, and then sew them together to make a larger) • Additional fabric for making our curves. You’ll want at least two pieces of 18x18” fabric, but they don’t have to be precut to that specific size. A couple fat quarters would be good too. (Personally, Heidi likes naturally dyed fabric for this, but any print or solid will work. Cotton or linen is ideal, and the fabric should hold a crease when ironed.) • Straight pins (Heidi likes a combination of long quilting straight pins, applique pins, and safety pins. Ten pins of any kind will be more than enough) • A sewing needle (Heidi likes milliners the best, see the link for my preferred brand, etc, but any needle will work fine) • Thread (Heidi likes DMC pearl to go with my milliners, but any thread that fits in your needle will work. Heidi prefers a bold, contrasting color) • A thimble. (Heidi finds that a thimble is VERY helpful for stacking stitches on the fabric) • Tissue paper. This can be repurposed from a gift, etc. 1-5 sheets will be plenty. Optional Supplies: -A gripper. (Heidi likes having a gripper to help pull the thread to the other side, but since this workshop is piecing instead of quilting, this is optional.) -Large scissors to cut fabric (not a snip scissors, something around 3”). Shared scissors will be provided but you may wish to bring your own to maximize your class time and experience. -Scissors to cut the tissue paper (Heidi will likely use the same Westcott office scissors to cut both fabric and tissue paper, it’s in the supplies link as well) Shared scissors will be provided but you may wish to bring your own to maximize your class time and experience. Prep Requirements: You'll need a piece of base fabric that is 18x18" (If you like to sew fast and big, you might want four pieces like this.) Large, geometric, curved shapes are a modern quilt staple, and they can be great fun to appliqué by hand! Prep, pin, and start sewing a gorgeous quilt using these exciting techniques. While students will work on an 18” x 18” mini in class, the techniques learned will easily scale up when they are back home. In this workshop, students will see examples of completed and in-progress quilts made with this technique. They will also learn how to cut, iron a turned edge, pin, and sew these curves. The workshop focus will be on curves, turned edge seam prep, and using a visible running stitch to join the curves. Students will be amazed at how quickly they can generate a stunning quilt top using these techniques!
