Required Supplies: • A picture of a favorite landscape (We'll be simplifying the image and using it for inspiration only. A jumping-off point.)
• A variety of fabrics to recreate the landscape. You don't need to faithfully recreate the colors in the landscape! The image is for composition only, so choose a palette of 8-12 colors that speak to you. Rhea finds it helpful to choose mostly solids, with a few carefully chosen prints. If this part is overwhelming, feel free to bring more fabric than you think you might need (a fat eighth is more than enough) and you can edit down.
• Three sheets of 8.5" x 11" card stock
• Pencil, pencil sharpener, eraser and clipboard
• Marking tool (a regular pen is fine)
• All purpose scissors, suitable for both fabric and paper. Shared scissors will be provided but Rhea suggest scissors to maximize class time.
• Glue pen (Rhea likes Sewline)
• Hand-sewing needles (Rhea likes Milliners)
• Thread (Rhea likes Mettler All Purpose Polyester 50 wt.)
• We will also be using our phones to take pictures and keep track and refer back to our compositions-in-progress, If this poses a problem, please let me know! Optional Supplies: • Paper scissors AND fabric scissors Supply Kit URL: https://alewivesfabrics.com/
English paper piecing typically involves the tessellation of geometric shapes and the forethought of other quilters. Projects such as the Lucy Boston Patchwork of the Crosses or La Passacaglia rely on carefully laid out plans and the cleverness of fussy cutting. While plan-following and fussy cutting are typical tools in the average EPPer’s arsenal, how does one begin if they want to improvise English paper piecing? In this workshop, students will learn how liberating and easy it can be to go through the process without templates and pre-made papers. Rhea will discuss basic fundamentals that make improvisational English paper pieced designs easy to access and the pitfalls to avoid while creating them. Students will compose, refine, and begin piecing their own original block during the workshop, leaving with the skills to finish and create many more.
