Hales works as a care integration specialist with Oregon Health and Science University’s (OHSU) Department of Urology, where he coordinates care for gender-diverse individuals seeking affirming genital surgery. He is an advocate for increased access to gender-affirming care, and is open about his own personal experience as a transman, including undergoing gender-affirming surgeries at OHSU. Hales is currently a second year MPH student at OHSU and Portland State University’s joint School of Public Health. He aspires to continue to uplift and serve his community through inclusive innovations in healthcare administration and policy. Hales also vehemently supports the inclusion of patients of lived-experience in institutional and systemic policies, and standards of care.
Hales holds undergraduate degrees in philosophy and political science from the University of Portland, and also completed post-baccalaureate studies in pre-medicine at Portland State University. He worked for several years as a medical scribe and patient advocate prior to his current position at OHSU.
