Dr. Chris Mullins received his BA and MS degrees from the University of Louisville Department of Biology and his PhD degree from the Department of Microbiology and Immunology at the Vanderbilt University Graduate School of Medicine. He then continued his research training as a National Research Council Associate at the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD), National Institutes of Health (NIH). In 2002 Dr. Mullins joined the Division of Kidney, Urologic, and Hematologic Diseases (KUHD) of the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK), NIH, as the Director of Cell Biology Programs in Urologic and Kidney Diseases. In this role he provides scientific and administrative oversight for studies of urologic and kidney disorders and relevant translational and clinical science. Dr. Mullins’ primary research interests include benign prostatic disease; urologic pain disorders; contributions of pathogens to urologic diseases; and the pathophysiology of the kidney, bladder, and lower urinary tract. In addition, he serves as the NIDDK Project Scientist for the Multidisciplinary Approach to the Study of Chronic Pelvic Pain (MAPP) Research Network and the George M. O’Brien Urology Centers and as the Project Officer for the Symptoms of Lower Urinary Tract Dysfunction (LURN) Research Network and the Urinary Stone Disease Research Network (USDRN). Dr. Mullins also serves as the Director for the Collaborative Grants Program for Resource-Related Studies and Chairs the KUH Urology Working Group. In his current role he also develops and provides oversight for numerous NIDDK initiatives, including the NIDDK Prostate Research Strategic Plan, and national and international scientific meetings; and represents the NIDDK on numerous NIH working groups and to advocacy and professional organizations.
