Sarah M. Temkin, M.D. is the Associate Director for Clinical Research at the Office of Research on Women’s Health (ORWH) at the NIH. Within ORWH, Dr. Temkin provides expertise and support for the coordination of clinical women’s health research across NIH’s Institutes, Centers, and Offices.The clinical research team oversees the U3 (Understudied, Underrepresented, and Underreported) Program, the office’s interprofessional development program, and activities related to gender as a social and structural variable that influences health.
Dr. Temkin is a board-certified gynecologic oncologist. She graduated with honors from Georgetown University Medical School after receiving an undergraduate degree from Cornell University. She completed her residency in obstetrics and gynecology with the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai and completed a fellowship in gynecologic oncology at the SUNY Downstate Medical Center. She has been active in clinical research throughout her career, with a recognized expertise in clinical trials, cancer prevention, and equity in both cancer care and the clinician workforce. Prior to joining ORWH, Dr. Temkin held academic faculty appointments, practiced clinical gynecologic oncology, ran several clinical trials programs for women with gynecologic cancer, and participated in health services research related to cancer disparities. She is widely published and cited, has served on several editorial boards, and has participated in a number of national committees related to women's health, cancer control, and treatment. Her prior NIH service includes having served as a Program Officer and as a special volunteer for the Division of Cancer Prevention within the National Cancer Institute.
