Dr. Artsen is an Assistant Professor in the Dept of ObGynRS at the University of Pittsburgh and a Building Interdisciplinary Research Careers in Women’s Health (BIRCWH) scholar. She completed her fellowship at UPMC after residency at University of California, San Diego and went to medical school at Washington University in St. Louis School of Medicine. As an academic surgeon-scientist, she divides her time between clinical duties, teaching, and research. She earned a master’s degree in Clinical and Translational Research. Her studies focus on wound healing specifically in vaginal reconstructions with a focus on vaginal fibroblasts and their role in mesh complications. She is also funded through a Magee-Womens Research Institute - Penn State Behrend Seed Grant to test the biocompatibility and clinical relevance of newly synthesized sustainable mesh materials intended to treat stress urinary incontinence. This research aims to transform the field from using petroleum-based plastic meshes to sustainable and biodegradable biomaterials. This is in line with her strong interest in Healthcare Sustainability and she is the co-founder of the AUGS Healthcare Sustainability special interest group. She also serves as the Chair of the Magee-Womens Research Institute Sustainability Committee and is on the steering committee for UPMC’s Clinicians for Climate Action.
