Neurogenic lower urinary tract dysfunction (NLUTD) is a finding that is obvious in patients with spinal cord injury, and multiple sclerosis, however NLUTD may also be found in patients with prior pelvic, or vascular surgery, or may have occult neurological disease presenting with incontinence or urinary retention. The primary purpose of the workshop is to help urogynecologists recognize the hallmarks of neurological injury to the lower urinary tract and to provide clear and concise information about the principles of management of NLUTD using a guidelines-based approach. It is intended to be a practical workshop with clinical examples of the various conditions and their management. Case studies that present to a urogynecologic practice will be discussed.
Learning Objectives:
Understand the neuroanatomy of the lower urinary tract and characteristics of a neurologically injured bladder and lower urinary traxt.
Detail the neuro-urological evaluation including the optimal diagnostic tests in evaluating patients with neurogenic lower urinary tract dysfunction.
Outline the primary principles of neurogenic bladder management based upon the guidelines for neurogenic lower urinary tract dysfunction.
