Dr. David Cosio (PhD) is the psychologist in the Pain Clinic and the CARF-accredited, interdisciplinary pain program at the Jesse Brown VA Medical Center, in Chicago. There, he provides consultative, educational, biofeedback, hypnosis, and a wide range of psychotherapeutic services. He also provides screening, assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of pain patients with co-occurring depressive, anxiety-related, substance use disorders, and other Axis I conditions, with an emphasis on the application of time-limited, evidence based approaches (Cognitive-Behavioral & Acceptance & Commitment therapies). He also serves as a faculty member of the University of Illinois-Chicago Pain Management Fellowship Program and a lecturer in the Department of Psychiatry at Northwestern University.
Dr. Cosio received his PhD from Ohio University with a specialization in Health Psychology in 2008. He completed a behavioral medicine internship at the University of Massachusetts-Amherst Mental Health Services in 2008 providing care for UMass-Amherst students, their dependents, faculty and staff, and state employees in the greater Amherst area. He then completed a Post-doctoral Fellowship at the Edward Hines Jr. VA Hospital in 2009. There, he provided biopsychosocial-oriented care to patients in primary medical care settings, including Primary Care in the General Medical Clinic and Specialty Clinics. He achieved specialist certification in Clinical Health Psychology by the American Board of Professional Psychology in 2017.
Dr. Cosio has done several presentations in health psychology at the regional level, such as the Midwest Pain Society and Society of Behavioral Medicine, and the national level, such as the American Pain Society and PainWeek. He also has published several articles on health psychology, specifically in the area of patient and provider pain education. He recently published a book entitled, Pain Relief: Managing Chronic Pain Through Traditional, Holistic, and Eastern Practices.
