The faculty will provide clinicians with education about the need for appropriate pain management so that they can advocate for patients to receive the treatment they need to adequately control chronic pain and improve function. This may include opioids when appropriate (as determined by an initial evaluation and risk stratification) as part of an individualized treatment plan (which includes ongoing assessment and monitoring). The faculty will also describe the pharmacologic rationale for the selection of appropriate opioids for chronic pain that have safety advantages over traditional opioids and formulations, while maintaining equivalent pain relief. They will address longstanding misconceptions and provide clinical recommendations for clinicians seeking a potentially safer yet effective analgesic on the appropriate use of buprenorphine for chronic pain. They will also critically review differences between abuse-deterrent opioid formulations, to assist clinicians in making risk-benefit assessments and selecting appropriate opioids to prescribe for patients with chronic pain.
