Chronic pain can be very complex, frustrating, and more times than not difficult to treat. Both providers and patients continually report on their frustrations with trying to understand what is causing and perpetuating chronic pain and on how best to approach it. There are a multitude of conventional, pharmacological, non-pharmacological, and complementary integrative health(CIH) modalities that are currently being utilized to address and treat chronic pain. However, research has recently shown that outcomes for treatment are closely tied to the relationship, communication and overall trust that the chronic pain patient has with his/her provider/healthcare team. Motivational Interviewing(MI) has been shown to be very effective when establishing and fostering a strong therapeutic relationship between a patient and provider/healthcare team. During this presentation, we will explore the foundational components and principles of MI and its practical applications and values within pain management and opioid safety.
