Peer specialists who are also trained in maternal mental health can augment well-established behavioral health treatment professional shortages to provide those in need with a trusted and knowledgeable support, give people with lived experience meaningful and needed paid work opportunities and build the capacity of obstetric providers who are serving as the maternal medical home to address maternal mental health disorders. Two completed pilots on the use of certified peer support specialists in maternal mental health will be discussed.

Learning Objectives:

Develop an understanding of why the obstetric primary care setting is a prime testing ground for behavioral health integration strategies.
Examine the potential role of certified peer support specialists in an obstetric primary care setting and how they can provide screening services and care coordination using new CMS billing codes.
Demonstrate how people with lived maternal mental health experience can become certified peer specialists in the maternal mental health space.
