Alcohol and drug use are public health issues that are increasing post-pandemic. Discomfort and lack of education, experience and infrastructure among health care professionals contribute to the absence of discussions as part of usual health care. We will cover use of a brief video to educate and engage employees, how International Overdose Awareness Day engaged team members from across organizational locations and roles and development of a leadership summit to empower leaders to support employees and patients. Learn how to start the conversation and change your language to improve knowledge, attitudes and comfort when addressing substance use.

Learning Objectives:

Reflect on the current lack of formal education within clinical health care professional training programs and among nonclinical health care professionals.
Illustrate opportunities to educate and motivate the entire health care workforce when addressing substance use.
Review successes and lessons learned from system-level initiatives in engaging the full health care workforce with a stigmatized topic.
