Learn more about how the prevalence of metabolic syndrome (MetS) among people with a serious and persistent mental illness (SPMI) and the factors that can lead to MetS in his population. We will address what can be done to reduce the risk of developing MetS and the benefits of people with an SPMI getting a formal diagnosis of MetS vs. having “only” diagnoses for the criteria.
Learning Objectives:
Examine the importance of integrated care and focus on the research that demonstrates how the prevalence of MetS can contribute to the premature death of people with SPMI.
Identify and rank factors (e.g., medical and behavioral health diagnoses, medications, behaviors) that enhance the risk of developing MetS, specifically among people with an SPMI.
Compare the health care utilization of people with and without a formal MetS diagnosis to recognize the importance of a formal diagnosis on health care utilization.
