The increasing prevalence of mental illness is a major concern. Fortunately, improved knowledge and acceptance of mental illness has increased the number of individuals seeking treatment. However, studies indicate that adherence to psychotropic medications is poor and cost is responsible for a portion of the non-adherence. One potential approach to this problem is to provide prescribers with a simple way to compare cost of medications. The purpose of this quality improvement project was to develop and implement a tool to assist providers to consider cost when prescribing psychotropic medications to adult patients upon discharge from an inpatient psychiatric hospital.

Describe the importance of discussing health insurance status, economic burden, medication cost concerns and a patient’s willingness to continue medication upon discharge to improve patient outcomes.
Evaluate the barriers to and successes of implementing a tool to assist providers in considering cost when prescribing medications to adult patients upon discharge from an acute inpatient psychiatric hospital.
Determine the impact of psychotropic medication costs and medication adherence that affects psychiatric inpatient hospital recidivism.
