Diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) seems to be the phrase on every tongue in health care. The key to effectively integrating DEI in health care rests on the ability to transition from conceptual and educational to practical while embedding it in the value system and workflow of an organization. One strategy to support this integration is to focus on social location. This highly interactive session will encourage in-depth personal reflection on social location, provide an overview of social location and how to discuss it in professional settings and help participants explore their social location and identify areas of their own privilege and marginalization.
Learning Objectives:
Explain what social location is and articulate what social and systemic factors make up social location.
Identify the social and systemic factors (i.e., social determinants of health) that drive health disparities and inequity and how these factors play out on a daily basis in patient care.
Compare and contrast how your social location varies from a patient's social location and the impact of that variance on treatment goals and outcomes.
