Dr. Arnab Mukherjea is Department Chair and Associate Professor of Public Health at California State University, East Bay. He completed his undergraduate (BA in Molecular & Cell Biology with a minor in Education) and graduate (MPH in Health & Social Behavior with specialization in Multicultural Health; DrPH in Applied Health Disparities Research) degrees at the University of California (UC), Berkeley and postdoctoral training (Tobacco Control and Chronic Disease Prevention) at UCSF and UC Davis. Dr. Mukherjea's research has been funded by the National Institutes for Health, Centers for Disease Control & Prevention, Office of Minority Health, and the state of California's Tobacco-Related Disease Research Program and has been published in numerous peer-reviewed journals. His applied research interests broadly revolve around using community-engaged methods to understand and address health disparities among understudied Asian & Pacific Islander (API) subgroups, with a particular focus on contextual and culturally-framed risk factors. Dr. Mukherjea's current studies include examining facilitators and barriers for colorectal cancer screening among diverse South Asian subgroups in Northern California, and translation of findings into effective interventions (funded as a pilot project by National Institute of Aging via subaward from the Rutgers University Resource Center for Minority Aging Research (RCMAR). He is more broadly exploring the various social, cultural, historical, migratory, and generational traumas that influence indices of health among diverse South Asian subgroups (funded as a pilot project by National Institute of Aging via subaward from the Center for Aging in Diverse Communities at the University of California, San Francisco). His postdoctoral and graduate research focused on understanding the myriad factors influencing unique forms of tobacco use among South Asians in the United States, and their contribution to tobacco-related disease in this population (including disproportionate burdens of cancer), which will be ultimately valuable for comprehensive and targeted intervention strategies.
Dr. Mukherjea is Vice Chair of the Steering Committee for the California Alliance for Schools & Programs of Public Health. He maintains membership in the Asian American Research Center for Health (ARCH) and was a trainee in Asian American Cancer Awareness, Research & Training (AANCART) Program. Dr. Mukherjea values providing mentorship to students and trainees to identify and pursue careers that align with personal values and social impact. He firmly believes that community participation is essential for affected groups to understand, address, and ultimately take ownership of their own individual and collective health prospects.
